Decorating with words

I've always loved the idea of turning a quotation from a beloved book into wall art, hanging it somewhere where I can see it and draw inspiration from it all through the day. Yesterday, my Pinterest addiction won out over sickness, and I mustered the energy to finally make the project a reality.

Also pictured: the beautiful quilt handmade by Auntie E. Louise Bates!

The quote is from Anne of Green Gables (natch); I was inspired by this print, but needed more of a pop of color to liven up the bare cream walls in Lu's nursery. I used a light hand with the paint because I wanted a kind of antique-y, weathered look, but I think something bolder (maybe an ombre effect or a chevron print?) would look nice, too.

Here's how it worked: I bought two identical canvases. I stuck peel-and-stick letters on them. (This kind--I ran out of Os and had to modify a Q, which is why it looks kind of wonky but I'm OK with that). I took the canvases outside and sprayed them (and a hefty portion of the lawn) with satin-finish spray paint. I let them dry and peeled off the letters, which was more satisfying than it should have been and probably speaks to a deep-seated mental illness of the compulsive variety. (I came home from the grocery store a few hours later and realized that I had a pink-painted W stuck square in the middle of my ass the whole time).

Ta-da! The whole thing cost $17.

By the way, here's what the rest of Lu's room looks like right now:

Wouldn't it be great if, when babies learned to crawl, they were all, "Thank you for wiping my butt while I flail my legs, let me shove some of this shit in the closet for you?" But no. Noooooo. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Have you ever decorated with words? Which did you pick? If you haven't yet, but you'd like to try this, which quote would you choose?

  1. Good for you because that is freaking adorable! I have yet to make any crafts I like on pinterest but I have made lots of yummy recipes and so far they've mostly turned out delicious so that's been good for some inspiration in the kitchen!

    1. Thanks! James thinks Pinterest is stupid (just like a man!), so I've started making all this stuff to convince him otherwise. "Did you like your dinner tonight, honey? THANK PINTEREST!"

BTW, I am really loving your wedding inspiration board. It's making me wish I could do the whole planning thing over again! If only polygamy was legal... :)

  4. I love it! (And I'm not just saying that because seeing the quilt actually on Lulu's crib gave me all sorts of warm fuzzies.) I would love to do something like that in the littles' room, but I have absolutely no idea what quote to use. I get panicked over things like that - if it is going up on their walls it has to be just the perfect thing, right? And so everything I look at just screams "Not good enough!" and then I get discouraged, and THAT is why they have blank walls.

Well, that and I am terrible at finding frames for the pictures that we DO have.

    1. I felt the same way, which is why I waited so long to make this...but for $17? You can take the chance, and if you find you don't like it, you can take it down after a few months and make another!

    2. P.S.: We looooove our quilt. It's the perfect weight for keeping Lu warm at night but not TOO warm. And so pretty! Thank you again, dear friend. x

  5. LOVE THIS! I too have a new decorating addition since joining Pinterest. I'm okay with that though since I have been inspired to craft a bit and to add the much needed 'layers' to my home. This week I'm working on the porch, it's almost done and I hope to post photos this weekend.

I think I will steal/borrow your canvas idea, brilliant!

  6. I once made a whole load of poem boards, painted to coordinate with the walls with poems written on in gold pen with little decorative spirals, I was going through a bit of a poetry phase at the time.
    love your boards,
